Of course decacordes are not new\u2014Rene Lac\u00f4te and Ferdinando Carulli collaborated on the design of one in the early 19th century, and more than a century after that Narciso Yepes and Jos\u00e9 Ramirez built a more modern version. Players here and there have played other custom models;\u00a0M\u00e4ntyl\u00e4&#8217;s was made by the contemporary Finnish luthier <a href=\"http:\/\/en.liikanenguitars.palvelee.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kauko Liikanen<\/a>.\u00a0M\u00e4ntyl\u00e4 is particularly notable because she has championed modern composers and has actively commissioned many new works for the instrument, a few of which can be heard on her wonderful, just-released solo decacorde album,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alba.fi\/en\/shop\/products\/5301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orfeo Amoroso<\/a>,\u00a0on Finland&#8217;s Alba label. (I&#8217;ll be writing more about that album soon.)<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s Video Pick, however, comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duodryades.com\/en\/duo-dryades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duo Dryades<\/a>, which features\u00a0M\u00e4ntyl\u00e4 and Finnish bandoneon player Kristina Kuusisto (who was reviewed in this space earlier in 2018 for her fine collaboration with French guitarist Roger Eon: Duo Silb&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/recent-albums-from-thanos-mitsalas-duo-silb-and-composer-randy-hathaway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ouverture<\/em>)<\/a>. Duo Dryades was formed in 2002 and has played around Europe ever since, while\u00a0M\u00e4ntyl\u00e4 and Kuusisto have also individually pursued many other solo and ensemble projects.
