{"id":12590,"date":"2019-03-22T11:33:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T18:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/?p=12590"},"modified":"2019-03-22T14:20:04","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T21:20:04","slug":"video-pick-of-the-week-xuefei-yang-plays-dilermando-reis-xodo-da-baiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/video-pick-of-the-week-xuefei-yang-plays-dilermando-reis-xodo-da-baiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Video Pick of the Week: Xuefei Yang Plays Dilermando Reis&#8217; &#8216;Xod\u00f3 da Baiana&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been on a Brazilian music kick lately\u2014fueled by recent album releases by Fabio Zanon, Daniel Murray, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Jan Depreter, and others\u2014so I was thrilled last week when this video popped up from one of my favorite players, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xuefeiyang.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xuefei Yang.<\/a>\u00a0Xuefei released her <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Tq5e7K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Colours of Brazil<\/em> <\/a>album back in 2016, and it contained three tunes by the great Brazilian guitarist, composer, and teacher Dilermando Reis (1916\u20131977), including this lively and fun number,\u00a0<em>Xod\u00f3 da Baiana<\/em>. (Roughly translated, that means having affection for a woman from Bahia.) You can listen to the entire <em>Colours of Brazil<\/em> album on <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2ZpF1XyVJg8TfzAxiCPJdG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reis&#8217; own recording career began in the early 1940s, but he enjoyed his greatest successes in the 1950s and &#8217;60s. Besides being an oft-covered composer, he also helped popularize the works of Jo\u00e3o Pernambuco (<em>Sons de Carrilh\u00f5es<\/em>) and Pixinguinha, and Radames Gnattali dedicated his 1970 <em>Concerto No. 1 for Guitar and Orchestra<\/em> to Reis. Eight years earlier, in 1962, Reis fronted Gnattali&#8217;s orchestra on an album called <em>Presen\u00e7a de Dilermando Reis<\/em>, which closed with a guitar-and-orchestra version of\u00a0<em>Xod\u00f3 da Baiana. <\/em>It&#8217;s not clear to me when Reis recorded the piece originally.
