{"id":14902,"date":"2020-06-25T21:18:27","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T04:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/?p=14902"},"modified":"2020-06-25T21:18:27","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T04:18:27","slug":"video-pick-of-the-week-raphael-feuillatre-plays-rameaus-les-sauvages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/video-pick-of-the-week-raphael-feuillatre-plays-rameaus-les-sauvages\/","title":{"rendered":"Video Pick of the Week: Rapha\u00ebl Feuill\u00e2tre Plays Rameau&#8217;s &#8216;Les Sauvages&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite trends of the last few years has been the number of guitarists (particularly young ones) who are exploring the keyboard works of the great French Baroque composer (and Bach contemporary) <span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Philippe_Rameau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean-Philippe Rameau<\/a> (1683\u20131764). It&#8217;s true that transcribing works by Rameau for guitar is nothing new\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3i7ySN0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Segovia recorded <em>Minuets<\/em><\/a> by Rameau in 1939, 1944, and 1954, and played them later in life, too. Julian Bream was playing an <em>Alegretto<\/em> by Rameau in the early 1950&#8217;s. Christopher Parkening included a Rameau <em>Rondo<\/em>\u00a0in his first method book. Not surprisingly, guitar duos have done splendid work with Rameau, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2BeMrt4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assad Brothers<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">But as I said, there&#8217;s been an explosion in Rameau interpretations the last several years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">This wonderful recent performance of Rameau&#8217;s popular piece <em>Les Sauvages<\/em>, from the composer&#8217;s <em>Nouvelles Suites de Pi\u00e8ces de Clavecin<\/em><\/span> (1726<span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">\u20131727), is delivered by one of the finest young players on the contemporary guitar scene, Frenchman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savarez.com\/rapha%C3%ABl-feuillatre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rapha\u00ebl Feuill\u00e2tre<\/a>, who was the deserving winner of the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guitar Foundation<\/a><\/span> of America competition. Rapha\u00ebl\u00a0 included this piece on his superb 2019 Naxos <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3dxsYkI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guitar Recital<\/a> album (part of his GFA prize package), along with two other Rameau works.
