{"id":528,"date":"2014-10-22T10:02:57","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T17:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/?p=528"},"modified":"2014-10-23T15:42:13","modified_gmt":"2014-10-23T22:42:13","slug":"andrew-york-composes-piece-for-munro-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/andrew-york-composes-piece-for-munro-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrew York Composes Piece for Munro Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AndrewYorkPainting_400.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AndrewYorkPainting_400-300x253.jpg?resize=300%2C253\" alt=\"AndrewYorkPainting_400\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AndrewYorkPainting_400.jpg?resize=300%2C253&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/AndrewYorkPainting_400.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Classical guitarist Andrew York has stepped into the light, so to speak. <\/p>\n<p>The Grammy-winning composer, and former member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, has penned a musical work for the exhibition \u201cBruce Munro: Light,\u201d which will be on display this autumn at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia.<br \/>\nCommissioned by the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, the York piece is titled &#8220;Millennia Facing East,&#8221; which the Virginia-native York describes as a \u201ccrystallization\u201d that works best when paired with \u201cmodern culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wiltshire, England-based Munro is known for his large-scale multi-media installations. \u201cLight,\u201d his latest, presents visitors with seven outdoor and three indoor artworks.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Pfeifer, of the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, says that when he first saw the work of Munro, he instantly thought of York\u2019s music.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of York&#8217;s compositions speak to images of wind and darkness and light,\u201d says Pfeifer. \u201cSo that the movement from Bruce Munro&#8217;s outdoor sculptures of light against darkness and amidst the varying winds of the grounds of the Hermitage seems a natural match.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I first saw the artwork of Bruce Munro, I instantly thought of the music that Andrew York had already composed for the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra,&#8221; said Ken Pfeifer of the guitar society. &#8220;Many of York&#8217;s compositions speak to images of wind and darkness and light, so that the movement from Bruce Munro&#8217;s outdoor sculptures of light against darkness and amidst the varying winds of the grounds of the Hermitage seems a natural match.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce Munro: Light\u201d will be open Sundays and Wednesdays through Fridays through January 10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Classical guitarist Andrew York has stepped into the light, so to speak.
