The Giuliani pieces include a lively set of polonaises and more. It&#8217;s all quite lovely, stirring, and impeccably performed by this pair of Canadian virtuosos. (In his comprehensive notes, in English and German, Koim suggests that it is &#8220;inconceivable that [Henze] did not have Dowland&#8217;s lute music in his ear while composing his work for solo guitar.&#8221; Whatever the truth of that assertion, this disc works well as a whole, with old and new deftly linked in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n<p><em>3 Fantasias: DP 71, DP 73, DP 1a<\/em> (Dowland); <em>Nocturnal After John Dowland Op. 70<\/em> (Britten); <em>Sir John Langton&#8217;s Pavan\u00a0<\/em>(Dowland); <em>Sir John Smith, His Almain\u00a0<\/em>(Dowland); <em>The Most High and Most Mighty Christianus the Fourth, King of Denmark<\/em>\u00a0(Dowland); <em>Royal Winter Music: Second Sonata on Shakesperean Characters<\/em> (Henze)<\/p>\n<p>You can buy the CD directly from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stefankoim.de\/store.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stefan Koim<\/a>, or you can hear\u00a0samples (and purchase) through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpc.de\/jpcng\/classic\/detail\/-\/art\/royal\/hnum\/4216891?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">JPC<\/a>.
