After starting with a stately, crowd-pleasing historical piece\u2014a cello concerto by Vivaldi (arranged by CGQ member Roussel)\u2014the rest of the CD is devoted to four contemporary works that are considerably less conservative and more modern, with more dissonance, leaping and abrupt tempo and rhythm shifts, but still at least on the edge of melodicism much of the time. Patrick Roux&#8217;s<em> Concierto Tradicionuevo<\/em>\u00a0offers an interesting mutation of familiar Argentinean musical elements, while Hans Br\u00fcderl&#8217;s <em>Octopus<\/em> (listen below) goes from rhythmically manic to elegiac, and also includes some lovely, lilting passages; it&#8217;s quite a piece. The invigorating title work, which has a Bernard Hermannesque opening (think\u00a0<em>Psycho<\/em>) and closing\u2014and more sonorous movements in between\u2014also features guest cellist Rachel Mercer, to nice effect.<\/p>\n<p><em>Concerto for Two Cellos in G Minor, RV\u00a0<\/em>531 (Vivaldi);<em>\u00a0Fille de cuivre<\/em>\u00a0(C\u00f4t\u00e9-Gigu\u00e8re);\u00a0<em>Concierto Tradicionuevo<\/em>\u00a0(Roux);\u00a0<em>Octopus<\/em>\u00a0(Br\u00fcderl);\u00a0<em>Mappa Mundi<\/em>\u00a0(Donkin)Sample and buy through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atmaclassique.com\/Fr\/Albums\/AlbumInfo.aspx?AlbumID=1570\" target=\"_blank\">ATMA Classique<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2l1lgZc\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>This video of Hans\u00a0Br\u00fcderl&#8217;s <\/em>Octopus<em> (the only piece from the album we could find on YouTube) is a somewhat distant single-camera video, but it does capture the brilliance of the piece and the Quartet&#8217;s playing.<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8tACokpFukg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6045\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/sargent-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"sargent\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/sargent.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/sargent.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/sargent.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/sargent.jpg?resize=125%2C125&amp;ssl=1 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<em><strong>Little Cathedrals<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Jonathan Sargent<\/strong><br \/>\nSuite 28 Records<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago native, now living outside of Nashville, has plied his trade around the world for several decades and appears to have absorbed much \u00a0in his travels, particularly from Spanish\/Latin composers, from Rodrigo to Piazzolla, who are among those who have clearly influenced many of the compositions on this pleasantly derivative CD of his original compositions. The liner notes for the album state that Sargent makes &#8220;kinder, gentler music&#8221; designed to have &#8220;a harmonizing effect on body, mind and soul,&#8221; and it does succeed on that level.\u00a0Many of the songs feature pretty, if predictable, string arrangements, and overall few chances are taken. Every piece Kotronakis has chosen goes someplace interesting, and he is equally comfortable with balladic presentations such as Drozd&#8217;s beautiful Bach-influenced <em>Adagio, Op. 44<\/em> or Domeniconi&#8217;s <em>A Step to Paradise<\/em>, the Piazzolla tango <em>Zita<\/em>, or demanding multi-textured works like <em>Toryanse Tales<\/em> and Assad&#8217;s epic <em>Fantasia Carioca<\/em>.
