As with the CDs, these are not reviews per se (some\u00a0<em>will<\/em>\u00a0be reviewed in the magazine, but frankly most will not), but we think it\u2019s important to at least get the word out about what\u2019s being offered to guitarists out there. Hand says in the notes to the piece that the inspiration was Psalm 100 from the Old Testament: &#8220;It begins with a musical dedication, using unisons and octaves. The flute entrance reflects the opening words of the psalm: &#8216;Make a joyful noise unto the Lord,&#8217; and the rest of the piece was informed by each line of the psalm.&#8221; You can hear Hand performing the piece with flautist Jayna Nelson on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8bJ77lv0-VY\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube audio recording<\/a>, which is taken from Hand&#8217;s excellent album, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2mW9sYk\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Odyssey<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6392\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/leisner.png?resize=190%2C253\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"253\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>David Leisner<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheetmusicplus.com\/title\/away-sheet-music\/20421844?narrow_by=david+leisner\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Away: A Fantasy on &#8216;Shenandoah&#8217; for Flute and Guitar<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nTheodore Presser Company, 12 pp. plus parts<\/p>\n<p>Description from Leisner&#8217;s website: &#8220;The folk tune &#8216;Shenandoah&#8217; provides the material for this piece, commissioned\u00a0by the Diller-Quaile School of Music for the Arc Duo. \u00a0Small fragments of the tune are each explored obsessively, to\u00a0hypnotic effect. While the music never abandons the tonal language of the song, there is, instead of harmonic\u00a0conflict, more rhythmic conflict. It is all set in the context of a journey along a river, with episodes evoking currents,\u00a0a rolling river, rapids, waterfall, calming waters, canyon echoes, and still waters.&#8221; Advanced. He was firmly rooted in the music of the classical period, influenced by Haydn, Boccherini, and others. Their titles: <em>Imaginary Tango<\/em>, <em>Les a\u00e9roplanes de M\u00e9li\u00e8s<\/em>, <em>Noupour<\/em>, <em>Green Spanish Taratula&#8217;s Sleeves<\/em> (based on <em>Greensleeves<\/em>), and <em>Nico de Buenos-Aires<\/em>. \u00a0Advanced.
