However, I was not aware until quite recently that \u0160tendler put out a solo album at the beginning of 2016, called <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/first\/id1070808443?app=music&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First<\/a>\u00a0(which includes works by Regondi, Aguado, Rodrigo\u2014this one\u2014and Frank Martin, among others), and has made some fine solo videos. She has won prizes at competitions in Spain, Italy, and Slovenia, though she is not widely known outside of her homeland\u2014<em>yet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here she takes on Joaqu\u00edn Rodrigo&#8217;s dynamic\u00a0<em>En los trigales<\/em>,\u00a0which the Spanish master composed for solo guitar in the summer of 1938. The title means &#8220;In the wheatfields,&#8221; and according to Rodrigo biographer (and longtime <em>Classical Guitar<\/em> magazine writer) Graham Wade, writing in\u00a0<em>Joaqu\u00edn Rodrigo: A Life in Music<\/em> (GRM Publications, 2006): &#8220;This work could be interpreted not only as a vivid evocation of summer landscape, but also as a song of homecoming in which the Spanish national instrument became, quite suddenly, one of Rodrigo&#8217;s most intimately expressive voices.&#8221; It was dedicated to guitarist Narciso Yepes, and premiered by Regino Sa\u00ednz de la Maza, who also debuted (and is the dedicatee of) Rodrigo&#8217;s famous\u00a0<em>Concierto de Aranjuez,<\/em>\u00a0begun in 1938 and premiered the following year.\u00a0<em>\u00a0\u2014Blair Jackson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I first encountered the young Slovenian guitarist Karmen \u0160tendler last fall through some YouTube videos by the quite wonderful Weimar Guitar Quartet (\u0160tendler, Stephanie Jones, Hanna Link, and Jakob Schmidt; we&#8217;ll be sure to feature them in \u00a0a future Video Pick).
