{"id":68,"date":"2014-09-02T11:22:17","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T18:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgdev.stringlettermusic.com\/?p=68"},"modified":"2014-10-16T14:03:30","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T21:03:30","slug":"silent-film-classic-scored-to-live-classical-guitar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/silent-film-classic-scored-to-live-classical-guitar\/","title":{"rendered":"Silent Film Classic Scored to Live Classical Guitar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The worlds of classical guitar and circus carnies finally merge this month\u2014when the chilling silent-era suspense film, <em>The Unknown<\/em>, is presented in accompaniment with a new dual-guitar and violin score at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Co-commissioned in 2012 by the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain and the Austin Classical Guitar Society, the score was composed by European-based duo Les Freres Meduses\u2014guitarists Randall Avers and Benoit Albert\u2014who will be joined by Miro Quartet violinist William Fedkenheuer September 11 and 12 to perform the work at a screening of <em>The Unknown<\/em> at the Alamo\u2019s South Lamar\u00a0location.<\/p>\n<p>The score weaves together original music with well-known classical and folk interludes by such composers as Maurice Ravel, Isaac Albeniz, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Tod Browning (<em>Dracula<\/em>, <em>Freaks<\/em>), the 1927 film stars Lon Chaney as a fugitive posing as an armless knife thrower for a traveling circus; Joan Crawford co-stars as his out-of-reach love interest.<\/p>\n<p>The film begins at 7pm and has a running time of 78 minutes.
