Ian O\u2019Sullivan)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 class=\"p1\">From the Winter 2016 issue of <em>Classical Guitar<\/em><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Born-and-Raised-Classical-Guitar.pdf\"><strong>Click here to download a PDF of\u00a0\u2018Born And Raised\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bailey Matsuda is a teacher in the Performing Arts department of the Kamehameha Schools on the island of O\u2018ahu, as well as a musician, composer, arranger, and producer\u2014indeed, he produced O\u2019Sullivan\u2019s <i>Born and Raised<\/i> album, from which this piece comes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cBailey wrote this in in the mid-\u201990s as a tribute to a sugar plantation community in Ka\u2018u, on Hawaii Island [the Big Island], that was going through the closing of their sugar mill and experiencing a drastic change in a way of life that had sustained for four generations,\u201d O\u2019Sullivan says. \u201cThat community was comprised mostly of Japanese immigrants, but culturally very Hawaiian. This is a very common story in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe main melody is heard with a pedal bass line beneath slowly changing harmonies, evoking a feeling of timelessness and nostalgia\u2014what the Brazilians call <i>saudade<\/i>.
