{"id":7159,"date":"2017-06-27T11:00:13","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T18:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/?p=7159"},"modified":"2017-06-28T13:44:03","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T20:44:03","slug":"concierto-de-la-amistad-comes-to-dvd-lalo-schifrins-new-work-written-for-angel-romero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/concierto-de-la-amistad-comes-to-dvd-lalo-schifrins-new-work-written-for-angel-romero\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Concierto de la Amistad\u2019 Comes to DVD: Lalo Schifrin\u2019s New Work Written for Angel Romero"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6 class=\"p1\">BY BLAIR JACKSON<\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2rRPAcC\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/81T3e0CuWML._SX342_.jpg?resize=342%2C433&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"342\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a>The unveiling of a new guitar concerto is always worth celebrating, and in August 2016 Angel Romero, fronting the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, premiered Lalo Schifrin\u2019s <i>Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra No. 2: Concierto de La Amistad<\/i> as part of a program of music by Argentinian composers at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl. The entire concert has now been released by the C Major Entertainment company on a superb DVD called <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2sU4Upe\"><strong><i>Tango Under the Stars<\/i><\/strong><\/a>. Besides the expansive concerto by Schifrin\u2014who is best-known for his many Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated TV and film scores\u2014the disc includes full-orchestra versions of five pieces by Piazzolla (all but one featuring bandoneon player Seth Asarnow and a troupe of tango dancers) and four dances from Alberto Ginastera\u2019s <i>Estancia<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Romero and Schifrin have been friends for several decades. \u201cThe first time I heard Angel Romero\u2019s guitar-playing,\u201d Schifrin wrote in notes to the sheet music for the <i>Amistad<\/i> concerto, \u201cI was mesmerized not only by his impeccable technique, but also by the passion he has invested in every single note. That is why I wrote for him my first guitar concerto a few years back, which he recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. But that that was not enough for me. Now I have decided to offer him a second concerto in order to continue our musical journey together.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Schifrin further told the<i> Los Angeles Times<\/i>, \u201cThe concerto is a journey in time, reaching back to the ancestors of the guitar\u2014lutes, vihuelas, ancient instruments from the Orient and Africa\u2014to the six-string guitar we know today. The music travels from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, to the Romantic era, and modern times, through different scales and rhythms. The journey goes through Europe, especially Spain and Portugal, to Latin America and the rest of the world. It\u2019s also a series of dialogues between the orchestra and the guitar. Basically, this work brings a message of joy, or the memories of a dream.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For his part, Romero told <i>CG<\/i>, \u201cLalo is like family to me and he knows me extremely well and he knows my music. So I didn\u2019t really need to have any input; it was all created by him. He knows what I like and my technique, so he just goes wild. My technique is pretty boundless, so he writes for me knowing that what he puts down pretty much I can do, except maybe change a note here or there to make it more coherent for the hands\u2014but always within the realm of what he\u2019s trying to say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Asked if he can hear Schifrin\u2019s Argentine roots in the piece, Romero excitedly says, \u201cYes, of course! It\u2019s very Argentinian, but also so much more. At the beginning, there\u2019s a part that sounds like an Irish jig, and he covers the entire universe musically. But there are also parts sing very much like a soft, gorgeous tango. He\u2019s very romantic and extremely rhythmic\u2014it\u2019s a fantastic piece!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Remarkably, Romero and the orchestra had just one full rehearsal the day of the performance. The result is quite spellbinding\u2014in turns lush, driving, incredibly delicate, dramatic, melodious, and powerful.
