{"id":7316,"date":"2017-07-03T09:38:38","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T16:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/?p=7316"},"modified":"2017-07-03T09:38:38","modified_gmt":"2017-07-03T16:38:38","slug":"second-altamira-hong-kong-international-guitar-symposium-and-competition-coming-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/classicalguitarmagazine.com\/second-altamira-hong-kong-international-guitar-symposium-and-competition-coming-in-august\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Altamira Hong Kong International Guitar Symposium and Competition Coming in August"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s no doubt about it: Classical guitar is exploding all over Asia, with the number of festivals and competitions growing every year, more and more \u00a0students in Asia taking up the instrument, and also, significantly, more interchange between Asian festivals and Western guitarists.<\/p>\n<p>This coming August 9\u201313, the Altamira Foundation, headed by Hanson Yao, will stage the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guitarsymposiumhk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Second International Guitar Symposium and Competition<\/a> <\/strong>at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, and like the inaugural event in 2016, this one is shaping up to be one of the most important guitar events in Asia this year. Last year, such notable overseas artists as\u00a0Manuel Barrreuco Marcin Dylla, Marco Tamayo, Anabel Montesinos, Craig Ogden, and Ken Murray performed there, as well as leading Chinese performers, included the He Qing Duo and Xu-Tuo. (The concerts are also notable for having Hong Kong guitarists\u2014and there are many fine ones there\u2014begin each program.) This year&#8217;s lineup offers another strong and diverse international group, including <strong>Artyom Dervoed<\/strong>, <strong>Rene Izquierdo<\/strong>, <strong>Meng Su<\/strong>, <strong>Stephen Goss<\/strong>, <strong>Laura Snowden<\/strong>, last year&#8217;s competition winner\u00a0<strong>Anna Likhacheva<\/strong>, <strong>Duo Bandini Chiacchiaretta<\/strong>, <strong>Jose Maria Gallardo del Rey<\/strong>, <strong>Elina Chekan<\/strong>, <strong>Adrian Walter<\/strong>, recent Guitar Foundation of America competition winner <strong>Tengyue Zhang<\/strong>, <strong>Lie Jie<\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Loh<\/strong>, and many more.<\/p>\n<p><em>Below, the superb Russian guitarist Artyom Dervoed plays Roland Dyens&#8217; moving <\/em>Songe Capricorne<em>:<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sUlHTYTA3p0\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This year, a key focus of the &#8220;symposium&#8217; part of the event will be the commemoration of the thirtieth\u00a0anniversary of the first international guitar festival in China (Zhuai), and its key organizer, the almost legendary professor <strong>Chen Zhi<\/strong> from the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing. \u00a0Often referred to as the \u201cFather of Classical Guitar in China,\u201d Chen Zhi has had a significant impact on the guitar world over the last three decades years, nurturing many talented young classical guitarists who are now major performers on today\u2019s world stage.\u00a0Several of his students will return to participate at the Symposium as soloists and ensemble musicians.<\/p>\n<p>Another highlight of this year\u2019s symposium will be an International Early Music Forum, with a focus on the 19th Century Guitar, its style and interpretive practices.\u00a0Masterclasses and concerts featuring music of this period will also be presented.\u00a0 <strong>Carlo Barone<\/strong>, Italian exponent of 19th century performance practice will conduct the Academy\u2019s Graduate Orchestra, Philharmonia APA, in a concert of guitar concerti by Giuliani and Steve Goss.\u00a0Russian guitarist Artyom Dervoed will perform two recent new works by Steve Goss, the first for guitar and orchestra based on a Paganini sonata, the other based on the well-known &#8220;Carnival of Venice&#8221; theme.
