I&#8217;ve been bingeing on Beethoven recently, having been wowed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soloduo.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solo Duo<\/a>&#8216;s spectacular performance of the &#8216;Moonlight Sonata&#8217; (more formally known as\u00a0<em>Piano Sonata No. 14, \u201cQuasi una fantasia,\u201d Op. 27 No. 2) <\/em>at this year&#8217;s GFA, and enjoying the Schneidermann-Yamaya Duo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2uiu0yh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Beethoven for Two Guitars<\/em> <\/a>CD for the past couple of months.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This 2012 video by the <a href=\"http:\/\/losungaros.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Ungaros<\/a> guitar trio (which consists of, left to right in the video above, Hungarians\u00a0Lajos Horv\u00e1th and L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Szab\u00f3 and Peruvian guitarist Gonzalo Manrique) really knocked me out when I stumbled across the other day while searching for more classical-guitar Beethoven. \u00a0The Vienna-based trio (the name &#8220;Los Ungaros&#8221;\u00a0is a play on their two nationalities) made a very interesting choice in their arrangement: They use Szab\u00f3 on contrabass guitar to handle all the powerful lower-register parts, and it sits so beautifully amidst the two &#8220;regular&#8221; guitars.
